He enlisted in Toronto, Ontario, 11th August 1915, stating his occupation as a machinist, and his next of kin as Marian Fletcher, of 10, Poucher Street, Toronto. He had previously served for 3 years with the Imperial Yeomanry. He was five feet ten and a half inches in height, had a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had five vaccination marks on his left arm and two incised scars on his right thigh.
